The Basics of Golf

Are you off to place your first round of golf? Not sure what the basics of golf are? Want to make sure you follow the correct etiquette? Then read on!

You are allowed to have up to 14 golf clubs in your bag. There is no minimum number and borrowing clubs from other plays is not permissible and is actually frowned upon in most clubs.

At most clubs you will need to reserve or book a Tee time. Arrive early to ensure that you don’t miss your spot. If your time is 10.30, get to the club at least 30 minutes early. If you miss your time slot you may have to wait for another open, which on a busy day could take a few hours!

Many golf clubs have dress codes, call before hand to find out what they are. Some clubs require golf shoes, others leave it up to the golfer’s discretion. Again gloves are usually a golfer’s choice, most players prefer wearing them. Many private clubs ‘tip’ their cart attendants or jockeys, so it would be wise to have a few extra bills on hand for this. If you are playing at a municipal course then tipping is never an issue.

On your Tee off you must place the ball between the markers or cones. They are usually white or orange. Never place your ball in front of the markers, but your ball may be positioned up to two club lengths behind them.

For the first Tee off, the player who has ‘honors’ tees off first. This may be chosen by your group in several ways, straws, vote etc. On subsequent tees the player with the best score from the preceding hole goes first, the second best score next and so on.

The most important basics of golf rule is the ‘Play as it lies’. What this means is that where ever the ball comes to rest, is where you must play the ball from. Don’t move or touch the ball! The only exception to this is that you may pick up and clean the ball when it’s on the putting green. Ensure that you place a ball marker just behind the ball before picking it up.

Out of bounds are usually marked around the golf course by white stakes or lines. The penalty for hitting an OB is stroke plus distance. This simply means that you add one point to your score and go back to where you played the ball from and hit again. This many not always be possible on a busy golf course. So you may have to play a provisional ball. This requires you to go back to your tee off and play a second ball. You must announce to your partners that you are playing ‘provisional’.

You don’t want to keep players behind you waiting. If your group is playing slower, it is good etiquette to allow the group behind you to go in front. Slow play is often a big issue at golf courses.

Yellow stakes or lines mark a water hazard. You can try to play the ball but it is generally a bad idea. Instead take a one stroke penalty and move on.

Finally be responsible at a golf course, it is there to be enjoyed by everyone. Most clubs ask that you repair your pitch marks and divots and that you rake the sand bunker after you played, so players that follow you do not have to play out of your footsteps.

If you follow these basics of golf you will get full enjoyment out of your first round. Go play and have fun!
