iPhone 5S Review

The Apple iPhone 5S may look similar to its predecessor on the outside, with the exception of the Home button, however there are a number of distinguishing features which are worth taking note of. While it is debatable as to whether or not the 5S is a necessary upgrade, there are some interesting changes which have been made with this new smart phone that have users all over the world lining up to get one.

Display

Those who buy the iPhone 5S will notice that not much has changed with regards to the screen itself, still using the 1136×640 resolution, which is nearly 3x fewer pixels than the average smart phone. The innovation of the IGZO display from Sharp, however, makes this phone’s display significantly more power-efficient. In the past, Apple has used IPS displays which came from companies like LG and Samsung, but it seems as though they have made the switch to reduce their reliance on them.

Camera

One of the things that most iPhone 5S users can agree on is that the camera on this device is significantly better than anything we have seen before. Apple has established somewhat of a reputation for having high quality cameras in their devices, and this one is no different. With a resolution of 8 megapixels as well as a larger lens aperture, the camera on this phone is likely to please the average the user. The 5S’s camera also has a built-in image stabilizer, making it easier than ever for users to take clear and focused pictures.

OS and Apps

There is absolutely no doubt that the new iOS 7 has a totally new, and some would say controversial, look. The overall graphic design of this new mobile operating system is completely different, with a somewhat cartoony quality that will not appeal to many users. The operating system itself has undergone a number of changes, some of which are not for the better. The swiping motion can sometimes be frustrating, as it does not always work like it should.

The notification area on the this phone has been completely redesigned in the image of Android, offering a clear and straightforward design that will most likely please users. After swiping on the bottom of the phone, the Control Center appears, allowing you to access and adjust settings like screen brightness, the calculator, camera, and music playback controls. There have also been some improvements made to the multitasking user interface, with a design that is very similar to that of Web OS.

Touch ID

The fingerprint ID scanner is perhaps the most controversial of all the iPhone 5S’s features, though it is a very interesting one that deserves a close look. The home button on this phone also acts as a finger print sensor is embedded extremely well, protected by a sapphire crystal overlay that is very sturdy. The steel ring around the sensor triggers the scanning process which takes high resolution pictures of the user’s finger print. Setting up this feature is fairly easy and straightforward, making it a very clever and interesting feature.

Performance

Those who use this new incarnation of the iPhone will find that its overall performance has been vastly improved upon. The battery doesn’t drain as quickly when playing games and using applications which are processor-intensive, and even most of the regular apps can be run much faster since they do not draw from the main memory of the phone. The iPhone 5S uses the A7 SoC dual-core processor, which Apple claims is double the speed of this phone’s predecessor. There is also a marked improvement in the graphics performance to the point where most users who are familiar with the iPhone 5 will most likely notice the difference.

Overall

As a whole, the iPhone 5S is great smart phone and a huge improvement on the previous model in a number of ways, though perhaps not so much that users will absolutely need to upgrade right away. There are definitely some nice bells and whistles on this phone, but there have been some changes made to it which make its overall speed and performance superior. Apple has put their best foot forward with this phone, and most users will almost certainly be pleasantly surprised at all it has to offer.
